The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) will commence its annual joint discussions with States and Union Territories from May 20 to June 19, 2026, aimed at reconciling differences in State Domestic Product (SDP) estimates and improving comparability in national economic data.
The exercise, organised by the National Accounts Division (NAD) under the National Statistical Office, will be conducted at Khurshid Lal Bhawan in New Delhi over four rounds covering different groups of States and UTs.
The annual discussions bring together officials from the National Accounts Division and Directorates of Economics and Statistics (DESs) of various States and UTs to reconcile Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) estimates independently compiled by both sides.
According to MoSPI, the first round of discussions will take place from May 20 to 22, followed by sessions from June 3 to 5, June 10 to 12, and June 17 to 19.
This year’s consultations will focus on current-price GSDP estimates for 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25, based on the revised base year of 2022-23. Sectoral groups are expected to deliberate on updated methodologies, revised estimation techniques and fresh data sources adopted for compiling state-level economic output.
Senior officials from the DESs of participating States and UTs will join the concluding sessions to finalise decisions regarding revisions and harmonisation of estimates.
The comparable SDP estimates generated through the exercise play a crucial role in India’s fiscal planning architecture and are extensively used by institutions including the Finance Commission, the Department of Expenditure under the Ministry of Finance, and the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.
Officials noted that harmonised state-level economic data also supports policymaking, inter-governmental fiscal transfers, public expenditure assessments and macroeconomic planning.
The annual reconciliation exercise has gained increasing significance as India continues to strengthen data accuracy, statistical transparency and consistency in national accounts amid evolving economic measurement frameworks.
