Tata Electronics has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASML to support the rollout of India’s first commercial 300 mm semiconductor fabrication plant, marking a key step in India’s push to build a domestic chipmaking ecosystem.
Under the agreement, ASML will provide its advanced lithography tools and solutions to help establish and ramp up Tata Electronics’ upcoming fabrication facility at Dholera, according to a joint statement Saturday.
The comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in the Netherlands earlier on Saturday, met King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima at Palace Huis ten Bosch in The Hague, and addressed the Indian diaspora at a community event.
The ASML-Tata Electronics partnership aims to ensure smooth operations at the plant and support Tata Electronics’ customers globally, while also focusing on developing local talent, supply chains and research capabilities to underpin long-term manufacturing operations.
“This foundational partnership with ASML will help ensure the timely ramp-up of our Dholera fab, strengthen a trusted supply chain and build manufacturing excellence in India,” Tata Electronics CEO and MD Randhir Thakur said.
Christophe Fouquet, President & CEO of ASML said India’s expanding semiconductor sector presents significant opportunities and that the company was committed to building long-term partnerships in the region.
Tata Electronics is developing the Dholera facility with a planned investment of about USD 11 billion. The plant will manufacture chips for applications including automotive, mobile devices and artificial intelligence, targeting global customers.
The Tata Group company has also partnered with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) to access manufacturing technologies ranging from 28 nanometres to 110 nanometres. Construction of the plant is progressing, the company said. |
