The Alappuzha Boat Race is one of Kerala\“s most celebrated traditional events, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of India\“s southern state. In 2025, this spectacular water festival is scheduled to take place during the months of August and September, coinciding with the Onam festival season.
These traditional snake boats, known as Chundan Vallams, are handcrafted by skilled local artisans using indigenous techniques passed down through generations. Each boat measures over 100 feet in length and can accommodate up to 100 rowers, representing a masterpiece of Indian boat-building craftsmanship.
The main attraction remains the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, named after India\“s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. This event features magnificent snake boats competing in perfect synchronization, with rowers moving to the rhythm of traditional Vanchipattu songs. The races attract thousands of spectators from across India and around the world.
Local communities prepare for months in advance, with intense training sessions and elaborate preparations. The boat race not only preserves ancient traditions but also promotes local tourism and supports the livelihoods of numerous artisans, musicians, and hospitality workers in the region. |
