The European Super League was a proposed football competition that was announced in April 2021. The founding clubs included 12 of Europe\“s biggest football teams: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter Milan.
However, the announcement was met with widespread criticism from fans, players, and football governing bodies. Within 48 hours, all six English clubs withdrew from the competition, followed by the other clubs. The project collapsed due to the strong opposition from the football community.
The proposed format would have featured 20 teams, with 15 founding clubs having permanent membership and 5 qualifying based on their domestic performance. This closed system was heavily criticized for going against the principles of European football. |
