Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Indians to avoid hosting “destination weddings” overseas and instead choose locations within the country, arguing that such spending adds pressure on foreign exchange reserves at a time when the economy is grappling with the fallout of the West Asia conflict.
Addressing an event in Gujarat, Modi said overseas holidays and weddings had become increasingly common among affluent Indians, leading to significant outflows of foreign currency. He suggested that domestic destinations, including the Statue of Unity, could serve as meaningful alternatives for wedding celebrations and said couples could receive the “blessings” of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel there.
The Prime Minister said families should encourage younger generations to value India’s heritage, tourism circuits and cultural landmarks rather than associating prestige with foreign locations. According to him, vacations and major life events such as weddings should help people connect with the country’s history and traditions.
Linking his appeal to the economic impact of geopolitical tensions in West Asia, Modi said the country must collectively work towards reducing unnecessary foreign exchange expenditure. He noted that India spends vast sums on imports, particularly at a time when global supply chains remain strained and prices of imported goods are rising.
Calling the situation in West Asia one of the most serious global crises in recent years, he said India had earlier overcome challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic through collective effort and could similarly navigate the current turbulence.
Modi said continuing instability in oil-producing regions was a matter of concern for India because crude oil forms a major share of the country’s import bill. Until global conditions stabilise, he said, citizens should adopt small but meaningful lifestyle changes in the national interest.
As part of those measures, he encouraged people to reduce petrol and diesel consumption by relying more on public transport, electric mobility and carpooling. He also advocated work-from-home arrangements where feasible and advised citizens to moderate gold purchases to help curb import dependence.
The conflict involving the US and Israel on one side and Iran on the other began on February 28, with a fragile ceasefire in effect since 7 March. The tensions have disrupted energy supply chains and contributed to volatility in global oil markets.
Modi had made a similar appeal during a programme in Telangana on Sunday.
