The Ministry of Education’s Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL) has intensified efforts to improve governance and environmental responsibility in schools through Special Campaign 5.0, being implemented nationwide from 2 to 31 October, 2025.

The campaign focuses on institutionalising Swachhata (cleanliness) across government offices and educational institutions, while strengthening efficiency and record management systems. As part of the initiative, DoSEL is reviewing pending files, digitising records, and weeding out obsolete documents to streamline administrative work.
In schools, the Ministry has prioritised creating safe and inclusive learning environments through campus maintenance activities — including whitewashing, painting, minor electrical repairs, and ensuring functional sanitation and drinking water facilities. Several schools are also being beautified with murals and wall art inspired by traditional art forms such as Madhubani and Warli.
A key highlight of Special Campaign 5.0 is its focus on E-waste reduction, aligning with the “Mission LiFE” initiative unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP26 in Glasgow. To advance this goal, DoSEL, in collaboration with UNICEF, organised a nationwide webinar on E-waste Awareness and Reduction on 9 October, chaired by Secretary Sanjay Kumar.
During the session, Kumar underscored the importance of sensitising students and teachers to sustainable electronic waste management. Joint Secretary Amarpreet Duggal emphasised practical measures such as preferring cloud storage over USB drives and extending the life cycle of electronic devices.
The webinar drew enthusiastic participation from over 1.5 lakh attendees. Following this, E-waste Awareness and Management Drives have been launched in Assam, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Chandigarh through Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE across more than 1,000 schools, in line with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change’s guidelines.
To foster Jan Bhagidari (public participation), schools have been encouraged to engage alumni networks, Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), School Management Committees (SMCs), and local communities through the Vidyanjali platform.
Through these collective actions, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to promoting cleaner, efficient, and environmentally responsible educational institutions under the Special Campaign 5.0.
