Preserving Childhood & Fostering Holistic Learning

Anuradha Joshi, Principal of Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, New Delhi, emphasises the importance of preserving childhood amidst the evolving educational landscape. “I would like children to be children and enjoy an unfettered childhood,” she said in an interaction with BW Education, adding that this period should allow them to develop essential soft skills such as communication, collaboration, and social interaction.

Children today face a variety of pressures, which differ from family to family. Joshi observed that those who have opportunities to play and engage in diverse activities grow up healthier, despite busy parental schedules and external pressures such as social media and multiple extracurricular commitments. “Each generation has its own challenges,” she reflected, noting that while earlier generations faced different hurdles, today’s children navigate a uniquely demanding environment.
A key focus at the school is teacher training, underlining the importance of passion and understanding over resources. Well-trained, knowledgeable, and caring teachers can effectively educate students even without advanced equipment. “If a teacher has knowledge, cares for the children, and loves them, she will find a way to teach,” Joshi remarked.
Distinction Between Syllabus & Curriculum
While the syllabus provides a plan of studies, the curriculum encompasses all school activities, including assemblies, co-curricular initiatives, and clubs. Joshi explained that a competency-based approach with clearly defined learning outcomes ensures students achieve their full potential.

Experiential learning, self-directed and self-paced approaches, and personalised teaching strategies are all integral to fostering a positive learning environment. Teachers are encouraged to adapt to individual student needs, offering guidance and support according to each child’s unique learning style and pace.
Looking ahead, Joshi envisions classrooms that embody holistic education, catering to the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development of all children, including those with special needs. She advocates for environments that motivate students.

Students and teachers must engage interactively, and schools should provide a plethora of academic and co-academic activities that enable children to discover their passions and inspirations. “Once they find themselves, the world is their limit,” she concluded.
