Toshiba To Invest ¥55 Bn To Boost Power Equipment Output In Japan, India

Toshiba Energy Systems and Solutions unveiled plans on Friday to invest 55 billion yen (around Rs 3,232 crore) by FY2027 to expand its power transmission and distribution (T&D) equipment business, in line with growing global electricity demand.
The Japanese major said the investment will more than double the combined production capacity at its key facilities in Japan and India by FY2030, compared with FY2024 levels. The move builds on the 20-billion-yen investment unveiled in July 2024 for FY2024–FY2026.
With demand for T&D equipment exceeding earlier projections, Toshiba will deploy an additional 35 billion yen to expand its Hamakawasaki Operations in Kawasaki, Japan, and Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems (India) in Hyderabad.
“As global electricity demand continues to rise, ensuring a stable supply of T&D equipment is more critical than ever,” said Hiroshi Kaneta, Vice President of the Grid Solution Division at Toshiba.
In Japan, demand for power equipment is expected to stay high through 2030, driven by the replacement of ageing infrastructure, expansion of renewable energy, and construction of new data centres. In India, rapid economic and population growth, along with a push toward renewables, continue to boost electricity consumption.
The company plans to strengthen manufacturing capabilities by modernising existing production lines, building new ones, and upgrading factory infrastructure at both facilities.
Toshiba will also expand TTDI’s product portfolio to cater to the Indian market as well as international customers across North America, Europe, and the Middle East.
With over a century of experience in manufacturing switchgear, transformers, surge arresters, and other T&D products, Toshiba said the latest investment reinforces its commitment to ensuring a reliable global power supply.
