Jindal Stainless Invests $150 Mn In Growing Slag Processing Capacity
Jindal Stainless is set to make a USD 150 million investment to double the amount of slag it can process at its Jajpur facility in Odisha. This is a big step forward for the company’s efforts to be more circular and environmentally friendly. Harsco Environmental and the project are working together under a 15-year agreement. This builds on their ten-year partnership to recover metals from industrial waste. The goal of this new wet milling plant is to make operations more efficient by getting valuable metals out of slag, which is a by-product of making steel. The project helps Jindal Stainless reach its long-term environmental goals, such as its promise to have no carbon emissions by 2050. The company said that its carbon footprint went down by 14 per cent in the fiscal year 2025. This was due to a number of decarbonisation efforts, such as building India’s first green hydrogen plant for making stainless steel and installing the largest captive solar energy plant on a single industrial campus.
The expansion is expected to create about 140 new jobs in the area and help protect natural resources by using better waste management and circular production methods. Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, talked about how the company is committed to responsible growth that goes along with the growing demand for stainless steel in India and around the world.
The company is currently the largest maker of stainless steel in India and is also increasing its melt capacity to reach 4.2 million tonnes by FY27. The ability to process more slag will help this growth even more, making Jindal Stainless more competitive and sustainable in the steel industry.
This investment shows how heavy industries are increasingly focusing on circular economy principles, which combine economic growth with caring for the environment to meet global sustainability goals.
