Infra Projects Record Rs 5.65 Lakh Cr Cost Overrun In April: MoSPI
Infrastructure projects worth over Rs 150 crore each registered a cumulative cost overrun of Rs 5.65 lakh crore in April, according to the latest Flash Report on Central Sector Infrastructure Projects released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). The revised cost of 1,981 ongoing projects stood at Rs 42,78,402 crore, up from the original estimated cost of Rs 37,12,662 crore.MoSPI said the 1,981 projects are being monitored across 17 central ministries and departments, with cumulative expenditure reaching Rs 20.36 lakh crore, or nearly 47.59 per cent of the revised project cost, indicating steady implementation progress. Around 801 projects, or 40 per cent, have achieved over 80 per cent physical progress, while 277 projects, or 14 per cent, have crossed 80 per cent financial completion.
Transport, Energy Lead Infrastructure Pipeline
The transport and logistics sector accounted for the largest share of projects, with 1,459 ongoing projects and revised estimates of Rs 23.34 lakh crore, underscoring continued focus on roads, railways, aviation, shipping and urban transport infrastructure. The energy sector followed, with 221 projects accounting for Rs 11.30 lakh crore in revised cost, reflecting continued investment in oil and gas infrastructure, electricity generation, transmission and energy storage.
Among ministries, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways accounted for the highest number of projects at 1,137, representing 57 per cent of the total, with a revised cost of Rs 10.81 lakh crore. The Railways Ministry was implementing 260 projects with a revised cost of Rs 8.69 lakh crore, while the coal, petroleum and natural gas, power, housing and urban affairs, and water resources ministries also accounted for a significant share of the infrastructure pipeline.
