LNG Push: GAIL Signs Charter Deal With Alpha Gas

GAIL (India) Ltd has signed a long-term charter party agreement with Alpha Gas for an LNG carrier as part of efforts to strengthen its energy supply chain and shipping capabilities. The agreement has been executed with Pantheon Maritime Services Pvt Ltd, a Singapore-based affiliate of Alpha Gas, for the LNG carrier Energy Fidelity. The deal was signed in Athens by S Bairagi, Executive Director (Marketing – Shipping & International LNG) at GAIL, and Anna Angelicoussis, owner of Alpha Gas.
LNG carrier to boost shipping capacity and efficiency
The vessel has a cargo capacity of 174,000 cubic metres and is equipped with a two-stroke propulsion system, along with air lubrication technology and shaft generators aimed at improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. The addition of this carrier is expected to enhance GAIL’s LNG shipping portfolio and support more efficient transportation of liquefied natural gas.
The agreement is part of GAIL’s broader strategy under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which focuses on strengthening India’s maritime infrastructure and ensuring a more resilient energy supply chain. The move comes at a time when disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict have affected LNG supplies, including interruptions in Qatar-linked shipments, prompting the company to rely on spot purchases and reallocation of resources to maintain supply. By expanding its shipping capabilities, GAIL aims to improve control over LNG logistics and enhance supply security amid evolving global energy dynamics.
