Mani Meraj, a popular comedian and YouTuber from Bihar, was arrested by Uttar Pradesh police on Sunday in Patna after his girlfriend accused him of rape, assault, fraud, and religious coercion.The allegations were made by Vandana, who is known online as Vannu the Great. She claimed that Meraj befriended her two and a half years ago while concealing his existing marriage.
She also alleged that he raped her after giving her a sedative in a drink and then lured her into a relationship with the promise of marriage.
Vandana said that after the couple got married, she was instructed by Meraj to keep it hidden.
She also said that he coerced her into an abortion and also pressured her into converting her religion to Islam and eating beef. She said that Meraj also siphoned a lakh of rupees from her.
She said that she later discovered he was already married and had two children, and also had other relationships on the side.
Who is Mani Meraj?
Mani Meraj is a YouTuber known for posting comedy sketches in Bhojpuri.
He is originally from the Sahebganj block of Muzaffarpur district. He currently has over 10 million subscribers. He also recently acted in a Bhojpuri film with Vandana. His debut film, called Welcome, was released early this year and
He has over 7 million followers on Instagram.
His last video on YouTube, posted around 4 months ago, amassed over 14 million views. On average, his videos have amassed over 30-40 million views, and several of his album songs have over 100 million views.
He has worked as an IPL cricket commentator in Bhojpuri. Meraj has also commentated for the Champions Trophy.
Before his career as a YouTuber, he owned and ran a chicken shop.
Vandana is also a social media influenceer and works in the Bhojpuri film industry and originally hail from Punjab.
Mani Meraj’s lawyer, Shivanand Bharti, said that the allegations were false and that this was a live-in relationship issue and not rape. He also said that the allegations were part of a conspiracy to defame the YouTuber.
