Cough syrup deaths: More states ban sale of ‘Coldrif’; Telangana issues ‘publ ...

The Telangana government on Saturday issued a 'public alert - stop use notice' for Coldrif cough syrup following its suspected links to the death of children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
"Stop Use Notice Regarding Coldrif Syrup (Batch No. SR-13),” said a circular issued by the Drugs Control Administration (DCA). It also noted that the product batch has been allegedly adulterated with diethylene glycol (DEG), a toxic substance.
All drug inspectors and assistant directors have been instructed to immediately alert retailers, wholesalers, and hospitals to "freeze" any stocks of the product batch if available in the market.
The DCA officials are coordinating with their counterparts in Tamil Nadu where the manufacturing facility is located, to track the distribution of the product batch to Telangana.
Meanwhile, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh governments have issued orders banning the sale and distribution of ‘Coldrif’ syrup.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George said a preliminary inquiry by the Drugs Control Department revealed that the flagged batch of the drug was not sold in the state.
"However, the Drugs Controller, out of concern for safety, has instructed drug inspectors to completely stop the distribution and sale of Coldrif," she said.
In a post on X, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said a ban is also being imposed on other products of the company that manufactures the syrup.
“The syrup was manufactured at a factory in Kanchipuram. Following the incident, the state government requested that the Tamil Nadu government conduct an inquiry. The investigation report was received this morning, and strict action has been taken,” he stated.
Madhya Pradesh witnessed nine deaths of children allegedly after taking the Coldrif syrup. Currently, 13 children, including eight from Chhindwara and Nagpur, are undergoing treatment.

The Tamil Nadu government has banned the sale of 'Coldrif' and ordered its removal from the market. The move follows the Food Safety and Drug Administration Department’s inspections at the pharmaceutical company's manufacturing facility in Kancheepuram over the last two days.
During the inspection and the examination of the samples collected, it was found that a particular batch of ‘Coldrif’ cough syrup contained diethylene glycol, a poisonous substance.
