DG CISF Praveer Ranjan- a force centric officer with a vision for success

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has now come under the leadership of senior IPS officer Praveer Ranjan, known for his remarkable leadership and force centric approach.
DG Praveer Ranjan is the 32nd DG of CISF that guards airports, ports, metro, key institutions and industries across the country.
An officer of the 1993 batch of the Indian Police Service from the AGMUT cadre, Praveer Ranjan is an experienced police officer with three decades of work in policing.
The Centre's choice for Praveer Ranjan as the successor was almost certain with him already working as Special DG (Airport) since 2024. He had moved on central deputation from his very successful stint as DG Chandigarh and appointed as ADG CISF (Airport sector). After an year of his appointment, he was also promoted as Special DG (Airport sector) in CISF.
Having an officer working at a leadership level and rank of Special DG in CISF, Praveer Ranjan had a stronger portfolio and force's experience to hold the post of DG CISF.
As Special DG CISF (Airport Sector), he carried out many programmes in the and workshops to build multi agency co-ordination and security. Duing the Pahalgam attack, the CISF airport sector was also given additional responsibility of managing security or cargo at the airports to ensure no terror activity could find a space to crawl. Airports are senstive zones with possibilities of various crimes from terrorism to hostage, smuggling to frauds, bomb threats ad much more aways lurking. CISF's airport sector under his leadership managed security successfully.
An officer from Delhi said, “DG Ranjan is positive officer who has a remarkable experience in people policing. He understands the force closely and always strives to work for them. In Delhi as well as Chandigarh, he made even the last man on ground feel special with his constant encouraging approach. His appointment as DG CISF will make the force stronger at roots”.
DG Ranjan has had a long stint in Delhi Police with posts as Special CP Crime and EOW. He served in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as DIG too. He has had a very successful stint as DG Chandigarh and probably in the recent times, the most impactful one!
As DGP Chandigarh, he was a proactive officer who believes in a strong police-public bond. He kick started community policing like Samavesh, Swayam, Cyber Swatchhta Mission, URJA – Ek Nayi Kiran, Student Police Cadet Programme in Chandigarh. He was also youth and sports enthusiast and encouraged young personnel in the force and youth in the city to join many outreach programmes.
He spent almost three years as the DGP and was regarded as one of the loved DGPs in the UT recently.
During his departure, they had organised a grand event to give a farewell to him holding him on their shoulders and danced. The UT police had never before seen a DG sit on the shoulders of their personnel dancing on beats of dhol; that was the happiness level of Chandigarh police under Praveer Ranjan's leadership.
A highly decorated officer, he is a recipient of the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2016) and the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2009).
DG Ranjan holds a postgraduate degree in History from Delhi University, a Master’s in Police Management from Osmania University, a Master’s in Public Management from the National University of Singapore & Harvard University, and an LL.M. from the National Law University, New Delhi.
With DG Ranjan's vision for successful projects, the appointment as DG CISF will scale the force to bigger heights. DG Ranjan has four years to his retirement and a long span of work time to start newer and bigger projects in CISF.
